I shopped around for a camera of this quality for a long time. The price is up there, but it is worth it. Just don't pay more than $800 for it.

Its functionality as a camera is suburb. It is intuitive and it shots beautiful video, especially in its cinematic mode. Really, you can't get this kind of quality from any other camera in its price range.

The camera itself seems to work just fine. I wouldn't know. I have been unable to upload video onto my PC. What I didn't know going into my purchase was that the HD video gets rendered in a format that requires specific software to upload it, view it and edit it on a regular pc.

Bought this camera a week ago and have had some time to play around with it. I have not yet used the provided editing software as I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Video from HF20 is too good. Connected the camera to my 1080p TV, with a $5.00 HDMI cable, I could not believe the video quality.

My grip is about the night shots, captured video is too noisy. The still images are also bad in low light. I know it does auto focus by sensing the reflected beam of IR or something from the subject. But in low light it seems to get lost or takes a long time.

While the images captured are excellent uploading video footage to your computer for editing is not simple. I have been trying for over 3 months to complete this task with no luck. What I've learned is that the technology of this particular camcorder is too advanced for most pc's. Buy it at your own risk. I'm ready to throw this one in the trash!

I purchased this camera in Nov '08 for my daughter's gymnastic recital. I was immediately impressed with the video quality. Although it has two HD settings, 24MB/s & 17MB/s, I use the 17MB/s option to save space and still retain the HD quality. However, my concern is with the wind noise. The CNET.com review commented on the fact the wind filter can no longer be set manually to the "On" position. Instead, it is either, "Off" or "Auto". With that said, I experience significant wind noise......

Bought this camcorder before X'mas 2008. Got it at excellent price ~$599. I like the camcorder a lot. Picture quality is excellent, can't complain about 60GB HDD. But the standard Canon software is inadequate.

Have researched several software and I like Power Director among all the ones out there. Even when I compress hi-def AVCHD to high quality WMV or MPEG, the picture quality way outperforms the quality I get with Canon mini DV camcorders.

When I was reading all the reviews of this camera I was all exited about buying one. This camera does not disappoint. It delivers outstanding video. Another cool thing that I love is that it has a 60 gig HDD in it. All you have to do is go into the HDD of your camcorder via the USB cable and drag and drop your videos onto your computer. What I didn't like was that I could not watch them on my computer using the Media Player that comes with Windows. I had to download a program (PowerDVD) to watch......

We got fast shipping and a great price on this camera. As others have stated, it has fantastic picture quality and the image stabilization is great. I am shooting long distance with no tripod and its quite steady. If you are going to shoot for more than an hour, get the 827 super long life battery.
Cons - battery for the remote not in the package. The software so far has been unusable. We have been burning to a DVD burner and then loading on computer to edit.

The Vixia hf s100 is an excellent camera. I just got it and I spent the weekend testing it. I didn't find any precise review for the postproduction workflow on Mac so I wrote my own for shooting in 24p mode. You will need fcpro 6.0.5 or fcexpress4. Connect the camera, select log and transfer with apple prores codec. The files will go into the scratch disk under the project name (mine is vixia test). I currently owned 3 Canon digital cameras and am very happy with every single one of them. Canon's optics is second to none and the Vixia HF S100 demonstrated that. I have compared the Vixia to the Sony HD video camera and the only pro's I see were increase optical zoom, bigger HD space (if you own a PC/laptop you know HD tends to die from years of use), and better night shots (I do not anticipate on recording nocturnal activities of bats).
